On countable connected locally connected almost regular Urysohn spaces

We construct connected, locally connected, almost regular, countable, Urysohn spaces. This answers a problem of G.X. Ritter. We show that there are 2^c such non-homeomorphic spaces. We also show that there are 2^c non-homeomorphic spaces which are further rigid. We discuss the group of homeomorphisms of such spaces.The following question was raised by G.X. Ritter: Does there exist a countable connected locally connected Urysohn space which is almost regular? We answer this question in the affirmative and in fact, show that not only are there as many as 2^c such spaces but that there are just as many rigid spaces with the same properties. Furthermore we show that every countable Urysohn space is a subspace of such a space. We also prove that every countable group is isomorphic to the group of autohomeomorphisms of some connected locally connected almost regular Urysohn space. Examples are given of groups of order c which can be represented in this manner.

Uniform algebra isomorphisms and peripheral multiplicativity

Let be a surjective operator between two uniform algebras with . We show that if satisfies the peripheral multiplicativity condition for all , where is the peripheral spectrum of , then is an isometric algebra isomorphism from onto . One of the consequences of this result is that any surjective, unital, and multiplicative operator that preserves the peripheral ranges of algebra elements is an isometric algebra isomorphism. We describe also the structure of general, not necessarily unital, surjective and peripherally multiplicative operators between uniform algebras.

On the Lipschitz classification of normed spaces, unit balls, and spheres

For every normed space , we note its closed unit ball and unit sphere by and , respectively. Let and be normed spaces such that is Lipschitz homeomorphic to , and is Lipschitz homeomorphic to .

We prove that the following are equivalent:

1. is Lipschitz homeomorphic to .

2. is Lipschitz homeomorphic to .

3. is Lipschitz homeomorphic to .

This result holds also in the uniform category, except (2 or 3) 1 which is known to be false.

     

On Analogs of the Tits Alternative for Groups of Homeomorphisms of the Circle and of the Line

In [1] G. Margulis proved Ghys's conjecture stating the validity of the following analog of the Tits alternative: either the group of homeomorphisms of the circle possesses a free subgroup with two generators or there is an invariant probabilistic measure on S ¹ . In the present paper, we prove the following strengthening of Margulis's statement: an invariant probabilistic measure for a group exists if and only if the quotient group does not contain a free subgroup with two generators (here is some specific subgroup of G defined in a canonical way). We also formulate and prove analogs of the Tits alternative for groups of homeomorphisms of the line.     

Non-expansive Mappings and Iterative Methods in Uniformly Convex Banach Spaces

In this article, we will investigate the properties of iterative sequence for non-expansive mappings and present several strong and weak convergence results of successive approximations to fixed points of non-expansive mappings in uniformly convex Banach spaces. The results presented in this article generalize and improve various ones concerned with constructive techniques for the fixed points of non-expansive mappings.     

Sensitivity analysis of composite piecewise smooth equations

This paper is a contribution to the sensitivity analysis of piecewise smooth equations. A piecewise smooth function is a Lipschitzian homeomorphism near a given point if and only if it is coherently oriented and has an invertible B-derivative at this point. We emphasise the role of functions of the typef=g °h whereg is piecewise smooth andh is smooth and present verifiable conditions which ensure that the functionf=g ° is a Lipschitzian homeomorphism near a given point for every sufficiently close toh with respect to theC ¹-topology.
